For the first time Vattenfall is presenting an integrated annual and sustainability report. The report reflects Vattenfall’s ambitions to achieve more sustainable energy production, foster sustainable consumption of electricity, gas and heat, and generate a sustainable financial result.
- In 2013 it became increasingly clear that the entire European energy industry is undergoing a fundamental structural change. To adapt Vattenfall to the new market conditions we are taking a number of measures. We are cutting costs, we are strengthening our cash flow, we are developing new, sustainable, and smart products and services that society and our customers are demanding, and we have reorganized the company in two regions, Øystein Løseth, Vattenfall president and CEO, states in his annual- and sustainability report CEO message.
Vattenfall's strategy for meeting the changed market conditions encompasses five strategic focus areas that can be summarized in three dimensions: sustainable production, sustainable consumption and sustainable financial performance.
- We will build up a market position as a company that offers smart and sustainable energy solutions, we will reduce our CO2 exposure, we will grow in renewable energy, we will have a continued strong and profitable position in the Nordic countries, and we will continue to reduce our costs and strive for operational excellence, Øystein Løseth, states.
To reduce the CO2 exposure and renewable electricity generation growth is an integral part of Vattenfall’s strategy. Since 2010 Vattenfall’s CO2 exposure has decreased from 93.7 million tonnes to 88.4 million tonnes in 2013. However during 2013 the CO2 exposure increased somewhat compared to 2012 due to the commissioning of new power plants.
Vattenfall’s plan for reaching the 65 million tonne CO2 exposure target by 2020 is described in the annual and sustainability report. Vattenfall aims to achieve the target mainly through CO2 reducing measures, such as co-combustion of hard coal and biomass, the closure of plants and divestment of operations.
Remuneration of senior executives of the Vattenfall Group are described in the annual and sustainability report. Vattenfall applies the Swedish Government guidelines in this area, which means Vattenfall Executive Group Management and other senior executives do not receive any variably salary component.
For 2013, Vattenfall is reporting its sustainability work in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) updated guidelines, G4. The sustainability-related aspects that are included in the integrated report have been chosen in order to obtain measurable results in Vattenfall’s sustainability focus areas, and to be able to present information that is open, clear and possible to use in an international comparison.
