COP22 – United Nations climate change conference

The 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, COP22, was held in Marrakech, Morocco, from November 7 to 18, 2016.

COP22, dubbed “the COP of Action”, followed on from last year’s well-publicised COP21, which made major progress in putting in place a global framework for tackling the serious threats of climate change. It focused on action items to achieve the priorities of the Paris Agreement, related especially to mitigation, adaptation, transparency, technology transfer, capacity building and loss and damage. The Paris Agreement, the first unanimously adopted universal climate agreement, committed nations to the aim of limiting the rise in global temperature to “well below 2°C” compared with pre-industrial levels, and pursue efforts to even further limit the global warming to 1.5°C. More than 25,000 participants were expected to attend COP22.
